“A few weeks ago, I was over in Eastern Oregon on vacation with my family, and we were hiking out by the Okeechos, out by Painted Hills--crazy beautiful. We were out hiking in the middle of nowhere, in the wilderness, up to the top of a mountain and there was a cliff on the edge and I was out there right on the edge, and there’s no guardrail or anything, and it’s a crazy feeling. Because on one hand, you’re scared to death. I was well aware that one wrong step, I’m dead. But at the same time, there’s nowhere I would rather be. Because I was in the presence of raw, untamed beauty. And that is the creation. Can you imagine standing in the presence of the Creator?”                                                                                   -john mark comer

"oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear Me!"

deuteronomy 5:29

i am learning that fearing God and loving Him are not mutually exclusive, but i don't think i know what it means to fear God.  especially after reading through so much repetition about God's holiness and how we are to fear Him in leviticus and deuteronomy of the old testament, fearing God is really important.  so i guess my prayer, and it can be your prayer, too, (i'll share! :)) is that we would learn what it means to fear God.  because i really don't understand what that looks like, but in the past, the custom of substituting the word "God" with G-d in english is based on a traditional practice in jewish law of giving God's hebrew name a high degree of respect and reverence.  they wouldn't even spell out His name completely because they so revered Him!  though i don't think fearing God means tip-toeing around Him in terror of being struck by an angry lightning bolt, i do want to know what it actually does mean as a lifestyle and constant position of the heart.  i feel as though we have lost some of that reverence today and i want God to show us how to fear Him.

p.s. i really learned a lot from john mark comer in his teaching (from which the above quote was taken), and he touches on this topic a bit.  so, if you're interested, you should click on his name above^^ for the link to the teaching!  gosh, that comer family!  just an outpouring of wisdom, i tell ya!

Skipping like a calf loosed from its stall,

I’m free to love once and for all
And even when I fall I’ll get back up
For the joy that overflows my cup
Heaven filled me with more than enough
Broke down my levees and my bluffs
    Let the flood wash me.
